Best Way to Create a Dynamic Grid – Java

Questions:

I’m new to GUI programming in Java, and for a final project in AP CompSci, I’m required to create a game with a 10 x 10 grid that generates randomly placed objects within each of the squares of the grid – even though we learned nothing about the GUI. I need to make this program as efficient as possible, but I am unsure of how I could create an easily manageable and implementable system in which I can manipulate that graphics of each grid individually, without having to edit individual pixels on the form. I’m not looking for specific code, but rather, a general solution.
