php – Moving <nav* tag into a separate document, partially duplicated parts in browser

Questions:

I am hacking away at AdminLTE, and I wish to move the main interface parts into separate documents.
I have no idea what I should include where. I am using php include to load the external documents.

The way I wish this to work is the topnav selects the sidenav, that then selects the page I want to load, so both the sidenav and the page are loaded as requested. Those seem to work just fine, however I wish to also load the topnav as a separate document, I have copied and pasted what I think is the relevant code into a new document and included it, however it’s not rendering as expected. The sidebar starts with an tag and that has been moved as is into a separate document without anything else other than the include and it renders fine, the topnav starts with a and it’s not rendering as expected.
